Stump Road
February 12, 2006
I shot this yesterday just as snow started falling. This is a little back road called upper stump road, it’s few minutes from where I go to post office. I managed to get myself lost and as I drove here it felt like a ghost town. Houses were 500 miles away from each other! The mail boxes were the only give away that something living was near by. Sorry about the water droplets on the lens!

Dark mood to this one, with the low light and the almost "hidden" angle of the photographer. Very cool.
very eerie.. I like it.. I was just wondering why you left the big tree on the left in the composition, it pulls my eyes towards it when I would rather follow the road to horizon... nice shot nonetheless.. ;)
Nic use a low angle here to emphasize the sense of scale and your frustration at being lost.
i'm not sure if this has been asked before or not, but do you actually use a soft focus lens or do you do the duplicate layer / blur / 50% opacity trick? i've only seen the effect used in portraits, but you've shown that it's lovely for landscapes too.
really the feeling of snow, many atmosphar in your's photo
Hello all, thanks for stopping by and commenting.
Kamarul: It looked too empty without the tree, I also liked this perspective a little more
Schmee: I don’t use a soft focus lens, but usually do the blur trick you mentioned. However in this shot, I didn’t do that blur trick. I think the effect you are getting here is from the light snow falling and creating a little washed out background.
By the way when I do the duplicate layer trick, I don’t go more than 15%-20%, otherwise it becomes too blurry and no focus point.
Just love the dark mood of this...I don't find the tree a distraction I must say...my eye still follows the road.
Great shot
Phil

Yes, this has a very sinister feel about it, very nice composition as it draws you in.
